Tagging Instructions

Before you begin tagging:

  • Take the time to make your items look their best. The more time you take to wash or even iron your clothing, the better they will look to a buyer and the more likely they will sell. Make sure you button all the buttons, zip all the zippers, tie all the bows, etc.
  • Make sure your items have not been recalled by the manufacturer. This information can be found at the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
  • If you care about selling your items, make sure you tag your items with cover or card stock quality paper and use a tagging gun for a professional look! We offer tagging gun kits for only $17; includes gun and 500 fasteners. In addition, The Kids Sale will buy your tagging gun back from you for $10 when you're done using it! Email christina@thekidssale.com if you're interested.

Whether you're using a tagging gun or safety pins, please use cover or card stock quality paper or sticky label paper works great too. These items are all available at your local office supply store or Target! If your item looses it's tag we will not be able to sell it!

    The Kids Sale Tagging Procedures:

    Clothing, Shoes & Accessories:

    • All clothing must be hung on plastic hangers. The front of the item should be facing left (i.e. After you have hung the item, look at the front of it. The top of the hanger should look like the top of a question mark.)
    • Attach your bar coded tag to the tag on the item using a tagging gun, safety pin, zip tie or ribbon. If you use sticky label paper, you simply stick the bar coded tag to the front of the clothing item.
    • You must use regular plastic shirt & pant hangers! Wire hangers hook on each other too easily and make looking through the racks difficult. Yes, you can have your hangers back at the end of the sale however I cannot guarantee that they’ll be the same hangers you brought! You’re welcome to take whichever hangers you think belong to you. Please email me if hangers becomes an issue for you, I may be able to provide you with some.
    • If you are hanging an outfit that has two or more pieces, hang the shirt on shirt hangers and the pants/bottoms on pant hangers separately and then rubber band the hangers together. Please do not safety pin items together. Outfits should have one price for all items rubber banded together and the bar-coded tag should be placed on the first item. The description on your bar-coded tag should indicate how many items are included in this outfit (i.e. 2pc outfit or 3pc outfit, etc…) Please use a small piece of masking tape on the second, third, forth… item(s) of the outfit and write your consignor #, the item # on the tape so that if the item gets separated from the outfit we can reunite it right away!
    • Consider grouping 2-3 items together such as baby onsies, pajamas and children’s t-shirts. Onsies also sell well grouped together inside a Ziploc bag (No hanging required if packaged this way.) We find that rolling them so that the top chest area of each onsie is showing works best. If you decide to group 2 items together we suggest you use separate hangers for each item and then rubber band the hangers together. Grouped items should have one price for the set and the bar-coded tag should be placed on the first item. Make sure you include the quantity of items in the description area of your tag! (Example “3 boys t-shirts” or “5 Gap onsies”) Please use a small piece of masking tape on the second, third, forth…items in this set and write your consignor # and the item # on the tape so that if any item gets separated from its set we can reunite it right away!
    • Please do not tape your items to hangers. Please do not tape tags to clothing items. Please do not staple tags to clothes. Please do not cover stains with sticky label paper tags. Please do not use straight pins to attach your tags to clothes. Items tagged in these ways do not sell!
    • Smaller items such as jewelry and hair accessories should be placed inside a Ziploc bag. We DO recommend using Ziploc bags for most small items like this. Tape the tag to the inside the Ziploc bag making sure we can read it. VERY IMPORTANT: Once all items and the tag are inside the bag, tape the top of the bag shut so that items cannot be removed!!
    • We will not accept clothing that is not on plastic hangers (other than the onsies and such referred to above) because they won’t sell. Shoppers like to look through items quickly and this can not happen if there is a pile of clothing on a table.
    • We do not recommend using Ziploc bags for shoes. Shoes are better displayed and are more likely to sell if the shopper can easily see every detail of the shoe. We recommend tying the shoes together using heavy duty string, zip-ties or ribbon! (Shoppers love the ribbon!) Punch a single hole through the top of your tag and then thread the string, ribbon or zip-tie through it and affix to the shoes.
    • If you are hanging a maternity outfit or grouping more than one maternity item together, use separate plastic hangers for each item and simply rubber band the hangers together. Make sure you include the quantity in the description area of your tag! (Example: 2 piece Motherhood Maternity outfit.) Please use a small piece of masking tape on the second, third, forth… item(s) in the outfit and write your consignor #, the item # on the tape so that if the item gets separated from the outfit we can reunite it right away!

    Toys, Games and Puzzles

    • All toys, games and puzzles must be in working order and include all pieces. Make sure all battery operated toys have working batteries. If they can’t be tested they won’t sell. If a toy has many pieces, you should secure them all in a Ziploc bag, use packaging tape, or a clear plastic container to keep the pieces together. Make sure your tag is visible and very securely fastened to all toys. Little hands may try to “play” with these items so in addition to securely fastening your tags you may also want to place a piece of masking tape on each piece or bag of pieces and write your consignor # and the item # on the piece of tape. Games and Puzzles should be taped shut in at least two places with regular scotch tape so that pieces don’t escape. We can open them at the check-out line if parents want to make sure all pieces are inside.

    Books, Videos/DVD’s, Audio Cassette/CD Music

    • Books should be tagged on the inside front cover with scotch tape or even better on the back outside if the tape won’t ruin the cover. Videos/DVD’s/ Audio Cassettes and CD’s should be tagged on the back cover with scotch tape. We don’t recommend using packaging tape on these items because it’s almost impossible to get that packaging tape off without ruining the cover itself.

    Indoor and Outdoor play equipment

    • We recommend using packaging tape to securely attach your tags to large indoor and outdoor play equipment. Make sure the tag is placed in a highly visible area; if shoppers cannot find the price easily they will not purchase the item!

    Baby gear

    • Tag large baby gear such as swings, high chairs, and diaper pails securely in a visible location with packaging tape.
    • Soft line items such as slings and diaper bags should be tagged using large safety pins, heavy duty string or ribbon securely attached through the tag (use a hole punch).
    • Smaller baby gear items such as bottles/sippy cups, baby monitors or other items with “parts” are best off in a Ziploc bag. Tape your tag inside the Ziploc bag making sure we can read it and then tape the bag shut after items have been placed inside the bag so they cannot easily be removed!

Baby and children’s blankets/bedding and room décor

    • Bedding should be placed in some sort of clear bedding bag, like the bag it originally came in so shoppers can see the pattern/design without having to take it out of the bag. Ziploc makes really large bags now which will be your best bet if you didn’t keep the original bedding bag. Bagging your bedding also helps all the bedding stay together (Comforter, Sheets, Pillow Cases, Curtains, etc). The tag should be taped to the inside of the bag so that we can read it and make sure the description includes information on everything that is in the bag. (Example: Comforter w/ matching fitted & flat sheet, 2 pillow cases, bed skirt). Tape the bag shut after items have been placed inside the bag so they cannot easily be removed!
    • Single baby blankets do not need to be inside of a bag and can be tagged best with the use of a large safety pin. Please pin the tag near one of the corners of the baby blanket.
    • Use tape (either scotch or packaging tape) on room decor such as wall hangings/artwork, picture frames, lamps, etc… Make sure that if you use packaging tape you place it on the bottom or the back of the item so that the item itself does not get ruined when the tape is removed.

    Furniture

    • We recommend using packaging tape to securely attach your tags to furniture. If you think the packing tape may ruin the item when it is removed, you can alternatively use heavy duty string, ribbon or zip-ties to affix the tag to the item (just hole-punch a hole in the tag and thread the string through it). Make sure the tag is placed in a highly visible area; if shoppers cannot find the price easily they will not purchase the item!

    Stuffed Animals/Baby Dolls/Dolls

    • Most stuffed animals and baby dolls should be able to be tagged with the use of a large safety pin. Alternatively, you could use heavy duty string, ribbon or a zip-tie to secure the tag to the item (just hole-punch a hole in the tag and thread the string through it). As with toys, you’ll want to make sure the tag is very securely attached to the item because little hands love to “play” with such items. In addition to securely fastening your tags you may also want to place a piece of masking tape on the item and write your consignor # and the item # on the piece of tape. If the tag doesn’t stay on the item your account will not be credited!

Now that you know how your items are supposed to be tagged, login and begin preparing your tags using our online barcoded tagging system if you haven't already. Keep in mind the following hints that may help increase the chances of your items selling:

    • Writing a good description is important! If a tag is lost from an item or a tag gets separated from its item, we will try our best to match it back up. The description you write can make all the difference! Try to include the brand name in description box #1 and then the color or other descriptive words in either of the two boxes.
    • Include words like “NEW” or “Like NEW” in your description if the item is New/Like New. Shoppers will be more likely to purchase items that are represented well and that they know they are getting a great deal on.
